Every now and then, you come across a product that makes you stop and take notice. Since the HOURGLASS Modernist Eyeshadow Palettes were announced, I’ve had my eye on these visually stunning offerings of eyeshadow goodness. My immediate reaction was pretty much I WANT THEM ALL. But my reality was a bit different. Having been burned by Hourglass before, and yes I am talking about the Ambient Lighting Palette, I decided to proceed with caution. I mean, really Sephora said that they were only available online, leaving no opportunity to test them out beforehand. *Note* Sephora’s website lies. You can buy them in-store at the Bloor Street location! What else was a beauty blogger to do but wait for others to review them and see what others were saying?
So here is the deal. This HOURGLASS Modernist Eyeshadow Palette is gorgeous. Gorgeous, but not practical at all. It is packages in Hourglass’ signature reflective packaging which is awesome unless you are like me and can’t stand to see fingerprints on any mirrored surface. It is roughly the same size as the Ambient Lighting palette and contains five eyeshadow colours, with four of those colours being shimmer shades and one being matte. Quite honestly, the shimmer shadows are where it’s at my friends. The one matte one is like chalk…and not in a good way. I thought it was like that only on my skin, but I used it in a Bridal Trial run the other day and it did not work…like at all. Other than that, the shades in the colour field palette are absolutely gorgeous, and will work on any skin tone.
There was little to no fallout when applied. I tried them both with a base and without it. If you tend to have oily lids like me, then I recommend using some kind of base or primer under this because creasing is so not cute. Other than that, having a base did not increase the staying power of these and I got a full days wear out of these shades. Colour can be built up for a very intense look, or it can be done very naturally. This palette is very versatile…but expensive.
Honestly, while this particular palette rates pretty high for me, I would say to exercise caution when purchasing from the HOURGLASS Modernist Eyeshadow Palettes; especially if you are planning to purchase them online. While they are stunning, the formula of the matte shades just don’t work. If you are looking to pick up one of these palettes, I would stick to the ones that are more shimmer than matte or at the very least try them out in-store before buying.
