So last month I broke down and joined the herd and purchased the Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Palette. Billed as

palette featuring three shades of Ambient Lighting Powder, the high-tech, soft-focus finishing powder that recreates the most exquisitely flattering types of light.

I really did have high hopes for this beautiful palette.  Afterall, I loved the Ambient Blushes.  Alas, it just wasn’t meant to be for me and the Ambient Lighting Palette.

While the packaging is super beautiful and ties right in with the full size versions of the Ambient Lighting Powders and Blushes, the formulations and colours just don’t work on my skin tone.  Sadly, on darker skin, they come off as very chalk like.  I tried to apply these in a variety of different ways, with differing results when looking at your face directly in the mirror.   Just as I thought that I had worked out the secret, I decided to take a photo of myself and let me tell you, it was not cute at all.  What looked fine to the naked eye was revealed to look like I had baby powder on my face in photos.  In the end, I just couldn’t justify keeping it so I sold it to Julie hoping that she would be able to get much better use out of it than I ever would.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this product.  It feels like silk and it doesn’t smell half bad either.  It just really didn’t work for me personally which is such a shame because I really wanted to love it and keep it in all it’s super shiny packaged glory.

Retailed for $67 CAD/$58 US it can be purchased online from

Oh my… these are so light on you! They are just perfect on my white-lady skin. Thank you Nicole :)

Lol. I’m glad they worked for you.

But you see what I mean when I said they look like chalk on my skin. It just didn’t work :(

It’s too bad these didn’t work for you. Total bummer, but at least Julie is getting some use out of them!

    • Nicole About Town

Yep. I’m glad that they work for her. Sad that they didn’t work for me though!

They need to make a larger range of colors. They look beautiful and feel like butter – but they’ll make me look like a ghost!

    • Nicole About Town

They do, but until WOC become part of their target range, I don’t really see that happening!

  • jenn @Abeautifulzen

yea i was wondering how this would fair on someone with darker skin tone. not that great apparently :(

Yeah, but what can you do? lol!

  • TheHappySloths

Dammn they oughta release some darker shades ASAP!

    • Nicole About Town

Preach Jasmine! They really should. They are missing a potentially huge market!

  • Jennifer Monforton

Sorry to hear this wasn’t a good fit with your skin tone- they should really release a palette for darker complexions because the formula is fab! :)

    • Nicole About Town

Oh I know. This stuff really feels like silk, but the shades just aren’t right! *cries*

  • Kiss & Make-up

Yeah, it does seem very light for you. Still looks like a nice trio though.

    • Nicole About Town

It is way too light and chalky for me, but it is so pretty! Alas, I just couldn’t justify keeping a product that is worth almost $70 and not getting some kind of use out of it.

  • Sarah M

That’s so sad that it wasn’t nice on you. I’m sure Julie wasn’t too overly sad though, lol.
