Lies We Tell Ourselves by Robin Talley

Lies We Tell Ourselves - Robin TalleySeptember 30, 2014 from Harlequin

In 1959 Virginia, the lives of two girls on opposite sides of the battle for civil rights will be changed forever.

Sarah Dunbar is one of the first black students to attend the previously all-white Jefferson High School. An honors student at her old school, she is put into remedial classes, spit on and tormented daily.

Linda Hairston is the daughter of one of the town’s most vocal opponents of school integration. She has been taught all her life that the races should be kept “separate but equal.”

Forced to work together on a school project, Sarah and Linda must confront harsh truths about race, power and how they really feel about one another.

Boldly realistic and emotionally compelling, Lies We Tell Ourselves is a brave and stunning novel about finding truth amid the lies, and finding your voice even when others are determined to silence it.

Thanks for correcting me Zoe! I forgot about that one because when I first started her work the craze was all about Delirium! I’ve made the change!

Amy Poehler is absolutely hysterical. I usually read one or two biographies/memoirs each publishing season and this is certainly on my list for when it comes out!

Thanks Jenn! I decided to try something different. I think I will do them like this from now on. Much easier to scroll through and focus on one book at a time! Broken Monsters and Of Bone and Thunder are both really good. You should add them to your TBR list!

Thanks Julie! Trying something new and it seems to have worked out so I think I’ll stick with it. You do now have a lot of books to read on the plane ride. You know I’m always good for a book recommendation!

OK, so the Jewel? Skip it. It’s pretty bad, the writing is worse than what you had in Selection and the story is really just a mash up of stuff that’s all have been done before. I was stupid enough to sign up for the tour for this, but if I didn’t, I would’ve dnfed it after 50 pages.

Yes to Retribution – can’t wait!!! Also Belzhar and Little White Lies look great :) thanks for putting this together :)
